Snowmageddon

February 6th, 2010

Some early pictures from snowmagedd0n of 2010. I’m going to guess we got about 20+ inches already and we still have a few more hours of snow. We definitely love living at the Meridian since we don’t have to shovel any of it and there are things near by. In fact this morning we went over to Harris Teeter to get some essentials like beer, guacamole and chips.

Snowpocalypse

January 8th, 2010

So the night of the holiday party turned out to be the start of a major snow storm in Washington. It was snowing in some form or another from late friday night until sunday morning. By the time it was all done we had almost two feet of snow. At around noon on saturday we went out to the park next to our apartment and played in the snow. We had a good time and there were surprisingly few other people out. Sadly the snow wasn’t the right wetness to really be able to make snowballs so mostly we kind of just rolled in the snow and walked around in it.Mostly we stayed in doors and otherwise enjoyed the fact that it was so pretty outside but that we didn’t have to go out in it since the roads were a disaster. Here are some of the pictures from when we went out to play in the snow. Keep in mind at this point only about 1/3 of the snow we got for the weekend had fallen.

Ross’ attempt at a snow angel. Yeah I clearly don’t know what i’m doing. But hey I’m from hawaii.

Unfortunately for nicole the weekend we got all the snow was also the weekend we were supposed to go to the theater to see Young Frankenstein. For most of the day I figured we’d be in good shape since the website was saying all shows were still going on and I thought we could just jump on the metro to get there even if the roads were awful. Around 1 we got called from the restaurant where we had dinner reservations to see if we were still coming cause they weren’t sure they were gonna open. An hour later they called us back to cancel so we where left without food before the show. So we headed over to Harris Teeter since it was nearby. Walking over there wasn’t bad since most of the walkways around the mall had been cleared properly and it was only lightly snowing. While we were shopping for food we got the bright idea that we should check the Kennedy Center again. Turns out they had just called off all the late afternoon and evening shows. Nicole was kinda bummed out since she was really looking forward to her show. We ended up wandering around the supermarket for awhile and bought a ton of food for dinner since we were kinda hungry and were trying to cheer ourselves up. For dinner we ended up with rib eye steaks, canned spinach, fresh  tortellini with sauce, brussel sprouts and bacon. Yeah totally random but it cheered us up.

Snow Day

March 2nd, 2009

Well this is what we woke up to this morning:

When we went to bed last night it looked like the big snow storm we were supposed to get was going to be just a dud. But I guess overnight the snow really picked up and we ended up with at least a few inches. Since the road still hasn’t been plowed nicole hasn’t left the apartment yet and is working at home with me. It’s kinda nice to have both of us at home for a snow day.

Avalon and the Ice

February 9th, 2009

This post is a little late, but a few weeks ago we had a snow storm that turned into ice. We ended up with a good inch or more of ice on the ground. Unfortunately this meant that everything was covered in great sheets of ice. The first day after all the ice we went out and dug ourselves out and cleared the snow/ice off our cars. I managed to slip and fall once when I was first coming out of the building (note to self, don’t wear sneakers on icy days :-p). By late that afternoon the avalon people had been out and had cleared off all our sidewalks.

Avalon has generally been pretty good about taking care of clearing the sidewalks and having the road cleared soon after we get a bunch of snow. However after they cleared off all the snow/ice from our walk ways this time they didn’t seem to put any ice out. In their defense when they were done clearing they sidewalks they had done a good job that you didn’t need any ice at the time. What they had forgotten was that during the day for the next few days the snow/ice along the sides of the walk way would partially melt and the water would drain onto the sidewalks. When the sun set and the temperature dropped all that water would freeze and icy over making all the walkways a disaster area. This ice over was particularly a problem on the road around the complex. In fact one night that week I hit a huge patch of black ice and slid a good 10 feet and almost slid into a bunch of the parked cars. Thankfully i stopped in time and was able to get into a parking space. The first night I cut avalon some slack and figured they would be out the next day and put some salt down. They never did come out and put some salt out and this went on for a few days.

On thursday night Nicole had parked her car and was trying to walk into the building with her stuff and groceries and hit a large patch of ice and ended up wiping out pretty badly. Needless to say nicole wasn’t happy and neither was I. The next morning I called avalon and told them they needed to come out and put some salt down as the sidewalks were icy. I not so subtly told them that they should do this before someone gets seriously hurt as my wife had already fallen down the night before in their parking lot. Within an hour of leaving this message on their answering machine I got a call back from them wanting to check that no one was seriously hurt and asking if nicole was going to be seeking medical attention. They also had their guys out later that morning putting salt down on all the sidewalks and roads like they should have from the start of the week.

It’s good that they did all that so it was safe to walk about our apartment complex but I should never have had to call them or put up with slipping and sliding for more than a night. My guess is either the maintence guys were being lazy or more likely they were trying to save money by not putting salt down. In either case its sad that it took me hinting at them that it was a liability suite waiting to happen to get them to do the right thing and put some salt out.
