Plateau Holiday Party

January 4th, 2010

Soon after joining Plateau I got an email announcing the Plateau Holiday Party.  I was very excited about this since I haven’t been to a holiday party since my first year working when Chesapeake had a party in January. It’s a shame IBM never did one since I think they are a great time for workers to hang out outside of work and a chance for our spouses to meet some of the people we work with.

The holiday party was at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria. We decided to take the metro to Alexandria and then hop the free shuttle from the metro to Old Town that way neither of us were driving and we could enjoy ourselves. When we arrived at the party it was clear Plateau had gone all out for the holiday party and everything looked fantastic. There was a wide selection of some fancy looking food. We made a point of trying almost everything and most of it was quite yummy. Also a good portion of my division was in attendance so Nicole was able to meet quite a few of the people that I work with on a daily basis.

Some of the desserts we tried. Most of that plate was very yummy.

One thing that blew me away at the party was that they were having door prizes. Initially they started small with $100 gift cards to area restaurants. But as the night progressed they went on to give away things like $1,000  gift certificates to skiing resort, a mac book pro, and even a 42″ TV. I even managed to win the second door prize given away which was a $100 gift card to Fogo de Chao. It was quite funny because I was at the bar trying to get a new drink and when they were announcing the prize all I heard was “all you can eat meat”. The next thing I know they were calling my name out and I went up to collect my gift. I’m excited to go to Fogo especially since we can now justify it since most of the meal will be on the company.

Overall I had a really good time at the holiday party and was really impressed by the company. Luckily we managed to snag a cab home after the party as it was really starting to snow and was the start of what I later would call Snowpocalypse but that’s for another post.

Thanksgiving

January 2nd, 2010

Thanksgiving this past year was in Dublin OH at Uncle Mark’s and Aunt Debbie’s place. It was great to see all of the crnkovich family except the new jersey crnks. We ended up taking the day off on Wednesday so we actually drove out Tuesday night. It was a long drive after work and we were exhausted when we got in but we were glad we then had all day on wednesday to hang out with the family. We even managed to sneak away for a couple of hours to go see nicole’s grandparents on her mothers side and to see Jean.

Celebrating a Phd

July 7th, 2009

This past weekend we celebrated Nicole’s completion of her phd program with two parties. The first party was here at our place on friday night where we invited all of our local friends to come out and help celebrate with us. We were surprised that even though it was the fourth of july most people were gonna be in town and were able to come out to the party. This was the first time we’d tried to have so many people over to our place at once and it worked out pretty well. It never got too crowded but we defiantly had a very full house at one point. It’s a shame we never tried throwing a big party at our place until the month before we’re moving out. People seemed to have a good time and our various circles of friends didn’t seem to awkward together. Most importantly though Nicole had a great time and really enjoyed her party.

Since nicole was the guest of honor I was left in charge of all the food and drinks. As I was doing most of the cooking I went with Hawaiian BBQ as the theme which meant our menu consisted of kalua pig and cabbage and some kalbi. Those two main dishes are easy enough for me to make and I know nicole likes them. I thought I had prepared enough food for the night but by the end of the night there was barely anything left. I had prepared 12 lbs of kalbi ribs and two batches of kalua pig and cabbage. This is on top of other people bringing food too. Based on people’s comments though everyone really liked the meat. Guess you can always count on my local food to come through as a food favorite.

On Sunday we went to our second party at Mark’s (boss’s) house to celebrate as a lab the completion of nicole’s phd. It was great to see everyone from her lab since not all of them were able to make it to our party on friday. The weather that evening was so nice we ended up moving the tables outside to their deck and having the party on the deck. After dinner nicole was presented with gifts from the lab. The crazy picture they took for nicole was of her ‘lab manager’ role and was very funny and appropriate. They also got her a beautiful necklace that I think she’ll be wearing frequently. Also they got her a pearl bracelet that was also very nice. Mark gave Nicole his traditional gift of a leather briefcase. It was a very simple and elegant dark red briefcase and matches nicole’s style very well. Initially she wasn’t sure about the dark red color as her first inclination was for a black but after thinking about it over night she decided to keep the deep red color. After gifts Mark broke out some sparklers he bought for the kids and everyone ended up playing with them. It was a great party but coming home from it Nicole was a little sad since her lab has been such a big part of her life for so long and will soon be leaving it.

Dr. Nicole Camara

June 29th, 2009

As the title suggests it was a very big weekend for Nicole. On friday she had her thesis defense and is now Dr. Nicole Camara. It’s a huge accomplishment for Nicole and represents the culmination of five years of hard work. I and the rest of her family are very proud of her especially since she’s the first person on my side of the family to ever receive a doctorate, the first PhD on the Crnkovich side and the second on the Sens. Nicole gave a wonderful talk explaining what she has done while she was at Hopkins and did such a great job I managed to follow along for more than half of her talk :-) . Here are some pictures from this weekend. Although the weekend got off to a rough start with travel arragnments we had a great weekend hanging out with all of her family.
