Christmas

January 9th, 2010

Christmas this year was back in Kentucky with Nicole’s parents. Since we both had recently changed jobs we didn’t have much vacation time and didn’t head out to Cincinnati until the 23rd. We left early on wednesday morning in an effort to try to beat traffic and we actually did really well hitting very minimal traffic. Also the roads were in good condition considering the amount of snow from the previous weekend. We ended up getting to Phil’s place around 4 in the afternoon but by the time we got there we were starving since we had really only stopped for gas and had skipped lunch. So our first order of business was to head out to LaRosa’s Pizza which is nicole’s favorite pizza place growing up. I had only vaguely remembered it from a previous visit. Although we were the only people there we really enjoyed our pizza and I thought it was quite excellent. By the time we thought to take pictures there was only a single slice left. After that we headed home and hung out at Phil’s place catching up and otherwise just taking it easy. Dessert that night required a trip out to Graters Ice cream which was the second of the three food places nicole just had to visit. Nicole loves this place because the chocolate chips there are enormous since they pour molten chocolate into their ice cream as they are making it.

The next day was Christmas Eve and started off with a quick trip to the mall so I could pick up the last of my gifts for nicole. Originally I was supposed to get it the weekend before but thanks to snowpocalypse that didn’t happen. Luckily we got an early start in the morning and managed to get to the mall soon after it opened so it wasn’t too crazy while I got the shopping I needed done. Afterwards we went to the third place that nicole loves to go to when she is back home. We had an early lunch at Skyline Chili. I have to admit that the place has really started to grow on me over the years and now I really do like going there especially cause their cheese coneys are so yummy. All that finely grated cheese just can’t be beat.

After lunch we headed into downtown Cincinnati to go and see a model train exhibit put on by the local power company. When we got there we were greeted with a free warm cookie which was awesome. The train exhibit was a little small but still very good. The line moved quickly and we got to see the model train after only a few minutes. I really liked it and there was a surprising number of things going on.

Look at the little construction workers. They even moved around.

After the trains we headed home and just hung out for the rest of the day. Nicole spent a little while trying to teach her dad how to play the Wii. Phil was a good sport about it and did a pretty good job playing. I spent most of the afternoon working on dinner since we were having prime rib and I was in charge of the meat. After dinner we headed out to catch midnight (10 pm) mass.

Snowpocalypse

January 8th, 2010

So the night of the holiday party turned out to be the start of a major snow storm in Washington. It was snowing in some form or another from late friday night until sunday morning. By the time it was all done we had almost two feet of snow. At around noon on saturday we went out to the park next to our apartment and played in the snow. We had a good time and there were surprisingly few other people out. Sadly the snow wasn’t the right wetness to really be able to make snowballs so mostly we kind of just rolled in the snow and walked around in it.Mostly we stayed in doors and otherwise enjoyed the fact that it was so pretty outside but that we didn’t have to go out in it since the roads were a disaster. Here are some of the pictures from when we went out to play in the snow. Keep in mind at this point only about 1/3 of the snow we got for the weekend had fallen.

Ross’ attempt at a snow angel. Yeah I clearly don’t know what i’m doing. But hey I’m from hawaii.

Unfortunately for nicole the weekend we got all the snow was also the weekend we were supposed to go to the theater to see Young Frankenstein. For most of the day I figured we’d be in good shape since the website was saying all shows were still going on and I thought we could just jump on the metro to get there even if the roads were awful. Around 1 we got called from the restaurant where we had dinner reservations to see if we were still coming cause they weren’t sure they were gonna open. An hour later they called us back to cancel so we where left without food before the show. So we headed over to Harris Teeter since it was nearby. Walking over there wasn’t bad since most of the walkways around the mall had been cleared properly and it was only lightly snowing. While we were shopping for food we got the bright idea that we should check the Kennedy Center again. Turns out they had just called off all the late afternoon and evening shows. Nicole was kinda bummed out since she was really looking forward to her show. We ended up wandering around the supermarket for awhile and bought a ton of food for dinner since we were kinda hungry and were trying to cheer ourselves up. For dinner we ended up with rib eye steaks, canned spinach, fresh  tortellini with sauce, brussel sprouts and bacon. Yeah totally random but it cheered us up.

Christmas Tree

January 3rd, 2010

This year we broke our annual Christmas tree tradition. Instead of going out to a farm somewhere and cutting it down we opted not to do that. We couldn’t find a good place near us in Virginia and out original plan was to just go back to the same tree farm in Maryland that we have been going to for years. However on the Sunday morning that we were supposed to go it was raining outside and cold making outside miserable. I manged to convince nicole that we should go check out the local home depot or some other tree lot near by and just get a tree from there. Nicole wasn’t thrilled by the idea but caved to the convenience and the fact the tree would cost half as much. We ended up at the local home depot going through all of the trees. Nicole was having a hard time picking out a tree since she’s never gotten a tree from a lot before and wasn’t used to the fact the the trees were all squished. After looking at a couple dozen trees we finally picked out a tree. It was definitely a bit more charlie brown than our usual trees but I liked him and it was a hell of a lot easier getting him home from home depot than driving all the way from the tree farm.

Before we decorated it.

The one hiccup we ran into when trying to decorate our tree was that we could only get 3 of the 6 strands of lights to work. Unfortunately we figured this out at 9PM on sunday night. So nicole went out all over the place looking for somewhere that was both open at had christmas lights. She tried cvs, then the Harris Teeter, finally she got in her car and went to the wallgreens in clareden to find the lights. While Nicole was out driving around Ross stayed home and went through each of the bulbs testing them and was able to get 2 more of the strands working in the time it took her to come back.

Thanksgiving II

January 2nd, 2010

In the middle of December Nicole and I decided we didn’t get enough turkey at thanksgiving so we decided to cook a second thanksgiving. Oddly enough on friday night Sean called us up telling us he was going to be in town on Saturday and asked us if we wanted to get together. He had perfect timing since we were going to do our second thanksgiving on saturday and since he missed out on thanksgiving it would be perfect for him to come over. We went all out for our second thanksgiving. Nicole cooked her party mashed potatoes and grandma crnkovich’s green beans. I made the turkey and stove top stuffing and I even bought a can of cranberry sauce.

Thanksgiving

January 2nd, 2010

Thanksgiving this past year was in Dublin OH at Uncle Mark’s and Aunt Debbie’s place. It was great to see all of the crnkovich family except the new jersey crnks. We ended up taking the day off on Wednesday so we actually drove out Tuesday night. It was a long drive after work and we were exhausted when we got in but we were glad we then had all day on wednesday to hang out with the family. We even managed to sneak away for a couple of hours to go see nicole’s grandparents on her mothers side and to see Jean.
