Birthday

March 23rd, 2009

So yes its been over a week but I’m finally getting around to posting about my birthday. It started off not so well but ended up as a very good birthday. It got off to a not so great start because I had a hard time sleeping the night before so I only had a couple of hours of sleep. This made me made at myself cause I knew i was likely gonna be tired and grumpy the rest of the day and not appreciate my birthday gifts. Also although it was friday because of an architect coming into town I need to go into the office instead of my usual work from home. So I headed into the office. Thankfully the meeting with the architect was early in the afternoon so I was able to drive home early so I wouldn’t be stuck in all the afternoon traffic and finished the day from home.

For my birthday Nicole was making me a prime rib dinner. I was very excited for this since we didn’t have prime rib when we were at home in hawaii at Christmas. Nicole’s effort in buying my prime rib is a story in itself since she ended up getting the meat on super secret sale. Nicole went to Safeway on wednesday to buy the meat in advance of my birthday so she could save time on friday. However when she was there the butcher told her that the cut of meat she wanted would be on sale $6 lb instead of the usual $9. When nicole got there on friday she had to ask the butcher working then and he didn’t even know it was on sale and there were no signs up around the place. So it was super secret since not even the workers knew about it :-) .

Nothing left by the time i got done

So nicole came home early from work and made me the prime rib the way Mom makes it home which means it was covered  in hawaiian salt and garlic (yum). Not only was she making me prime rib but she also was making a batch of chocolate mouse. On top of making a wonderful dinner she got all dressed up and put on her makeup too so I got to have dinner with a gorgeous lady.

While we were waiting for the prime rib to finish cooking I got to open all the gifts from my family. This birthday was one of the few times that there were a bunch of electronics that i wanted that weren’t too expensive. So my mother got me a new universal remote that I’ve wanted for awhile. It’s super smart and can control both the tv and tivo but it is also able to control the computer next to my tv when it’s in media mode. The only thing it can’t do right now is control the ps3 because that requires blue tooth. Nicole got me a new wireless keyboard for the same computer. this is good since we dropped cable and are doing streaming. This makes navigating to websites much easier to do than remoting into the computer. Scotty got me a new headseat for my computer so i can talk to people when i am playing my game on line. So all in all i got a lot of new toys.

And of course my night ended with nicole giving me another birthday gift ;-) .

Oya, Nicole’s Birthday Dinner

November 6th, 2008

For Nicole’s birthday I took her to a restaurant called Oya. It’s an Asian/French fusion restaurant that I found on opentable.com in downtown DC. We decided to go down to DC for once to eat instead of going up to Baltimore since there was no good reason to go up to Baltimore and we’ve never gone to eat at a nice restaurant down in DC.

Getting to the restaurant was a bit of the zoo but we had my trust GPS navigation thing that nicole got me for our anniversary. I managed to over shoot the valet line for the restaurant but just kinda pulled over anyway and made the valet guy come to me. Valet parking is absolutely necessary for us if we’re going to drive into the city. Mostly because I don’t want to go through the hassle of trying to find a spot when I don’t know the area.

The decor was very modern and everything was all white from the table to the chairs and even the wall. They had this really cool fireplace which we got seated next to. The only downside with the atmosphere was that for some reason there was a draft on one side of the table. In fact one of the waiters commented to the couple next to us that the lady always takes the inside seat and by the time they leave they make their dates swap seats with them. Overall though the atmosphere was fantastic and nicole and I really liked the place.

The cool fireplace that was next to us.

For dinner we opted to go with their prefix menu and add some extra rolls and sushi to our order. The sushi options weren’t the traditional japanese choices but were modern/American rolls. Most of the appetizers on menu you could see they started with a Japanese dish and then gave it a french twist. For the entree’s it was the opposite where they took a french dish and added an asian twist to it. For the most part all the food we ordered was fantastic. Some of the things we got we probably wouldn’t order again but that wasn’t the fault of the chef we just didn’t care for the flavor.

Throughout the night the service at the place was fantastic further reminding us it pays to go to a nicer resturant. The meal ended up being one of the most expensive we’ve ever had but figured that was just a result of going down into DC. Still we really enjoyed ourseleves and hope to go back there again at some point.
