Moving

July 28th, 2009

This past weekend we moved from our Columbia place. With nicole finished with her Phd we were finally in a position that we didn’t need to live so far away from work. Also since we weren’t ready to buy a place yet I was able to talk nicole into trying to live in DC for the year instead of finding another place in the suburbs. After a couple of rough weekends in June looking at over a dozen places we found a new apartment in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington VA. The location of the new place is fantastic with the metro only a block away and plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance.

The one major downside with doing the city living is that the apartment is a lot smaller than our old place. Our new place is only a one bedroom and is about 60% of the size of our place in columbia with no where near the amount of storage space. So in the weeks leading up to the move Nicole and I spent a lot of time going through all our stuff sorting through things. We had 3 piles of stuff. The stuff we wanted in our new place, stuff we wanted to keep but didn’t need in the next year, and the stuff we didn’t want. We ended up filling up a 5×10 storage unit out by my office and taking many car loads of stuff to the goodwill truck and to the dumpster.

On the day of the big move we were helped out by bunch of awesome friends and family (Chris from work, Adam from college, cousin Sarah, and Jenny and Andrew from lab). Since the weather was calling for a 90 degree sunny day we told people to come over at 10 but Nicole and I were up at 8 and started loading the truck. Since nicole had done such a good job of having everything organized and ready to move we had actually loaded the truck in a little over an hour which was well ahead of schedule. On top of that we managed to fit everything into the truck so that it  would only need to take one trip. At that point we took a break for lunch and then jumped in our cars to head to the new place.

I had the fun pleasure of driving the 16 foot truck on the Washington beltway. It actually turned out to not be too bad getting to the new place since I knew the road so well I minimized the number of lane changes that I needed to do. Still it was a stressful drive to the new place and I was griping the steering wheel with both hands and driving in the slow lane the whole time.

Once we got to the new place we were still running far ahead of schedule and we actually didn’t have access to the loading dock because someone else was using it. So first we unloaded my car that nicole had driven up. By the time we were done with that we had the loading dock. Unloading the truck turned out to be pretty painless since we didn’t have any steps to go up and we had an elevator reserved for us. Even though we had 3 less people for a good portion of the unloading we were done in an hour and a half. Our two places were a mess and nothing was unpacked but we had everything moved and managed not to have any major disasters. We made a quick trip out to the storage unit to drop the last of the stuff off and then headed back to our new place to start unpacking. It was a long day and we spent a lot of time getting ready for it but we were happy to be in our new place.

Haha nicole’s arm got beat up during the move. She looks like she is a druggy from all her bruises.

Celebrating a Phd

July 7th, 2009

This past weekend we celebrated Nicole’s completion of her phd program with two parties. The first party was here at our place on friday night where we invited all of our local friends to come out and help celebrate with us. We were surprised that even though it was the fourth of july most people were gonna be in town and were able to come out to the party. This was the first time we’d tried to have so many people over to our place at once and it worked out pretty well. It never got too crowded but we defiantly had a very full house at one point. It’s a shame we never tried throwing a big party at our place until the month before we’re moving out. People seemed to have a good time and our various circles of friends didn’t seem to awkward together. Most importantly though Nicole had a great time and really enjoyed her party.

Since nicole was the guest of honor I was left in charge of all the food and drinks. As I was doing most of the cooking I went with Hawaiian BBQ as the theme which meant our menu consisted of kalua pig and cabbage and some kalbi. Those two main dishes are easy enough for me to make and I know nicole likes them. I thought I had prepared enough food for the night but by the end of the night there was barely anything left. I had prepared 12 lbs of kalbi ribs and two batches of kalua pig and cabbage. This is on top of other people bringing food too. Based on people’s comments though everyone really liked the meat. Guess you can always count on my local food to come through as a food favorite.

On Sunday we went to our second party at Mark’s (boss’s) house to celebrate as a lab the completion of nicole’s phd. It was great to see everyone from her lab since not all of them were able to make it to our party on friday. The weather that evening was so nice we ended up moving the tables outside to their deck and having the party on the deck. After dinner nicole was presented with gifts from the lab. The crazy picture they took for nicole was of her ‘lab manager’ role and was very funny and appropriate. They also got her a beautiful necklace that I think she’ll be wearing frequently. Also they got her a pearl bracelet that was also very nice. Mark gave Nicole his traditional gift of a leather briefcase. It was a very simple and elegant dark red briefcase and matches nicole’s style very well. Initially she wasn’t sure about the dark red color as her first inclination was for a black but after thinking about it over night she decided to keep the deep red color. After gifts Mark broke out some sparklers he bought for the kids and everyone ended up playing with them. It was a great party but coming home from it Nicole was a little sad since her lab has been such a big part of her life for so long and will soon be leaving it.

Car 1, My Arm 0

July 6th, 2009

So we recently decided that we would be keeping both cars even after we move into the city since nicole doesn’t yet know where her job is going to be at. Unfortunately this means that a lot of the car maintenance that i have been putting off for the past few months now needs to be done. One of the things that might be due to be done was a brake pad replacement.  Having a mechanic inspect your breaks cost about $50 and I think is kind of expensive since all they need to do is put the car on a rack and take off a tire to look at the pads. When you’re having your tires rotated is another good time to do a brake inspection since the tires are coming off anyway but many places won’t tell you if you need the work done even if they’ve done 99% of the work as part of another job.

So this evening since i got home early for work I decided I would rotate my tires myself since they needed to be done and I could get a good look at my brakes. This isn’t a terribly difficult task and i’ve done it before and takes me about an hour. Things were going pretty well and i got the first three tires changed no problem and just needed to put the last tire back on in place of the spare that I had on. When it came time to pull the spare off it refused to come off. Now here is where I did something stupid. Instead of trying to figure out what was causing it to be stuck I started to pull really hard on it. Guess what happened? Yup you guessed it, I pulled too hard and managed to cause the car to fall off of the dinky little jack i had it on. When this happened the wheel well I was working on shifted about a foot down and the car crashed into my arm. This hurt like you wouldn’t believe. I got very lucky in that I managed not to break anything and am a proud owner of a very swollen forearm. On the upside I got really lucky in managing not to permanently damage my car and the stuck wheel came unstuck so i could put my tire back on and go back inside to lick my wounds.

It’s a good thing i’m a software developer cause clearly I make a piss poor car mechanic. I managed to screw up prob one of the simplest tasks that most people can do. My arm is nice and puff and by tomorrow morning i’m sure i’m going to have a nice bruise going on. Right now that $50 brake inspection plus $20 tire rotation is looking mighty cheap…..

On a side note this weekend while digitizing our files i found a maintenance receipt that listed my car millage as 43,000 miles. Since my car now has +140K miles it means i’ve driven my car over a hundred thousand miles which i found to be pretty impressive. Considering this is the first car I ever bought it’s lasted me for quite awhile and is still in pretty good shape.
