Processing Fees

August 22nd, 2008

I just bought tickets for the butterfly pavilion at the Smithsonians for tomorrow. Tickets are limited and sold in specific time slots, so they suggest you buy ahead.  No problem.  However, I went to buy them online and there was a $1.50 processing fee per ticket (on top of the $6 ticket price). Annoyed at the processing fee, I decided to call the museum instead, and order them over the phone.  Then, I was told there was a $2 fee per ticket for ordering them over the phone!  Needless to say, I went back and bought them online to save some money in processing fees (online is easier anyway).

What I don’t understand is why place don’t build the processing fee into the price of the ticket.  Instead of $6 per ticket and a $1.50 processing fee, why can’t you just make the tickets $7.50?  I would be a much happier consumer right now if I thought the tickets were $7.50, instead of knowing that I’ve paid an extra $1.50 for processing.

Anniversary

August 22nd, 2008

bit late but our anniversary was a few weeks ago. Can’t believe that a year has already past since we got married. It’s been a great but very fast year.

Thanks to the leap year our anniversary fell on a monday so we decided to celebrate on the Sunday before. That way we could take our time and nicole didn’t have to rush home to get dressed so we could go out. For our anniversary we went to OZ Chophouse a few miles south of us. We’ve never been there but saw it when we went out to dinner when my dad was in town in the spring.

Dinner was really good. We never go out for steaks since generally I think they are overpriced and I can do a pretty damn good steak myself at home. But since it was a special occasion we went to OZ’s. The food there was great and I really wasn’t much more expensive than our typical sushi dinner. I got a regular steak which was very yummy and Nicole got a fillet wrapped in bacon with goat cheese on top. The sides were also very good. The place is a little odd since it’s kinda in the far out section of the suburbs but is a high end steak house. We’ll see if they last but we had a good time.

Appetizer

Our oyster appetizer. It was very yummy and nicole even liked it.

Haircut

August 19th, 2008

I’ve had pretty much the same hair style for many years now, so I decided it was time for a change.  I got my haircut after work tonight and now have a new ‘do’.  She took 6 inches off the back.  It’s supposed to still be long enough to put back in a pony tail,  but we’ll see how that goes.

I think I like the new cut, and its much lighter.  The real test will come tomorrow when I style it myself and see how it turns out.  Hopefully the new cut will force me to style my hair instead of just throwing it up in a bun most of the time.

Below are a few pics….please ignore the exhausted look on my face.

Wii

August 13th, 2008

A few weeks ago Ross bought me a Wii as an early anniversary present. Now, this might seem like a strange anniversary present to some – but it’s something I’ve been wanting for a while and it’s something that we can play together.

I must say- I love the Wii and think it’s great! I find it very easy to play and the games we’ve gotten for it so far are pretty fun. It’s also nice to be able to pick it up and play for 10-15 minutes and then put it back down again.

The Wii came with the sports games which we played the first weekend. I was best at tennis, and worst at baseball. However, since then we’ve gotten other new games which we’ve been playing more.

Super Mario Galaxy is a great old style Mario game. Although I find jumps and maneuvers much easier with the Wii motes. You can also has a side-kick (2nd player) who can collect stars and hold off enemies for you. Ross recently helped me with a big boss fight that I couldn’t seem to beat without his help.

Last weekend we got Mario Kart. I’ve never really played Mario Kart before – but am finding this one fun. I enjoy the racing games more than the battles. Although I still frequently fall off the track or end up dead last, the racing game is still fun. However, I find the battles very difficult – I usually have no clue where I”m going, am too slow to pick up coins or shoot at other people – and spend most of the time wandering around getting hit by weapons. Maybe the more I play, the better I’ll get – but battles aren’t my favorite right now. The game came with one Wii wheel, which initially made playing easier for me. However, I think that playing with the wiimote and nunchuck are easier because it’s easier for me to fire weapons and jump that way.

Raymans Raving Rabbids. I asked Ross to find this game on ebay for me as I felt like I would enjoy a game full of funny games. The first two times I played it, I found all the mini games all very fun and silly. However, the last time I played it, I was in a bad mood and the game just frustrated me and put me in a worse mood. I don’t think video games are good relaxers for me. Maybe if I was better they would be more relaxing and less frustrating. Lesson learned: if I need to relax or calm down, a glass of wine and crap TV is the way to go.

Olympics

August 11th, 2008

So the Olympics have started again and up until last week I wasn’t sure if I was going to be watching them this year since they were being hosted in china. However once we watched the opening ceremony on friday night I remembered how much I love watching the Olympics.

First off, the opening ceremony was absolutely fantastic and a really good time. Although the parade of nations takes forever to go through it is one of the best parts because its a chance to hear about a lot of the countries and their athletes that you won’t see again since they are in sports that won’t make prime time and/or their athletes aren’t likely to make it to the finals. Also there is generally some good story about the flag bearer for each of the countries since they have generally done something noteworthy or their background makes for a great story. The way they lit the Olympic flame was one of the best ever I think. It was awesome watching the guy slowly run around the rim of the stadium. Also the performances showcasing different aspects of china and its culture were really well done and defintly demonstrates their people power.

Over the weekend we kinda just left the games on when ever I could. It’s interesting that way because you’ll end up seeing sports and results that you normally don’t see or hear about. You also learn more about the host country since its during those times that they’ll often run a short piece explaining a particular location or time.

Really when it comes down to it I love watching the olympics because I think it demonstrates that there is still hope in/for the world. All these countries that have internal problems or problems with other are able to rise above those things and compete with one another in friendly athletic competition. You also get to share with these athletes as some of them get to make their dreams come true.

There was one discordant note from this weekend’s olympic coverage that made me angry. That was the running of a couple of presidential political commercials. I was annoyed because I really think that the olympic’s aren’t the place for them especially since the Olympics emphasize unity. It wasn’t just one candidate but both of them ran commercials during the Olympics and really I wanted both of them to go away.
